QYA

For years, I have crept through the aisles of the public library, reading the backs and inside covers of the books in the young adult section, hoping to find books where girls don’t kiss boys, they kiss girls. I looked on website after website for lists of queer related literature, but unfortunately, many of the books did not meet my expectations, or were hard to find. And when I did find one I loved, I couldn’t go running to my mother or my best friend to tell them how much I loved it, because if I told them I read a book about a lesbian, they would have flipped. So I was limited to squealing to, well, myself.

Recently, I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great to have a place where I could talk to other readers about my favourite literature? I’m at the older end of YA readers, but I still love to go back to my favourite David Levithan or Maureen Johnson books for the umpteenth time. So I decided to create a place for YA enthusiasts to come together to discuss queer literature.

If this idea makes you pee your pants with excitement, or makes you happy in cleaner ways, check it out!

MusicMusicMusic!

Hello, people of the internet. I realize it has been quite some time since I last blogged, but I promise I have something good to make up for it.

MUSIC!

I have been frequenting a pretty cool site in the last week or so called The Hype Machine. Basically, this site collects links and articles from tons of music blogs, and posts them in a handy list. You can search for specific artists and songs, or just read them all as they are posted. Each blog post has a link to listen to or download the song they are discussing, which is really awesome. So, I decided today to introduce you to some of the awesome songs I have been introduced to by The Hype Machine.

Northshore by Tegan and Sara Album: Sainthood
Other notable tracks: Hell, Don’t Rush, On Directing
If you continue reading this blog, Tegan and Sara Quin will probably be mentioned a lot. They are my favourite. These awesome Canadian twins have been making amazing music for years, and recently released their 6th album, Sainthood. Above is a link to Northshore, a song that has quickly risen as one of my top tracks on iTunes. The lyrics are strong and powerful, and the song is good to listen to to let our anger, and is just generally awesome. Buy the full album on iTunes or Amazon.

Kiss With a Fist by Florence and the Machine
Album: Lungs
Florence and the Machine has been on my list of people to listen to for quite some time now, and I am glad I at least started now because I'm not sure how much longer I could have gone without her awesomeness. Another fun angry track, Kiss With a Fist has an awesome beat makes me want to dance around the room and just let it all out. Buy Lungs on iTunes or Amazon.

The Call by Regina Spektor
Album: The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Original Soundtrack
I've loved Regina Spektor for a while. Her most recent album, Far, is all kinds of awesome. However this song is not from that CD, but from the soundtrack to The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. I did not actually see the movie, but I'm sure it was awesome because they had Ms. Spektor on the soundtrack. I heard the song on a video/picture montage at my camp, and immediately fell in love. The lyrics and music are absolutely beautiful. Buy the movie soundtrack on iTunes or Amazon.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think of the tracks!

Crushes

Is it possible to like to people at once?

This is something I have often pondered. It seems that I always like more than one person at a time. It feels almost as bad as it might to be dating 2 people at a time. That is, if each was supposed to be a committed relationship. Shouldn’t I be able to commit to just one crush? And what happens if something were to happen between me and one of the crushes. How do you just stop liking the other person?

Thoughts?

Broadway Stars With Cute Noses

I've decided I'm going to tell you today about three pretty awesome people. Singing, dancing, acting, EVERYTHING sensations-- Celia, Andrew and Maggie Keenan-Bolger.

So who are they?
Pretty much the coolest siblings ever.

Celia has been on Broadway in the original cast of The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee (Buy the album here!) as Olive, and in the original cast of the revival of Les Miserables as Eponine. Andrew was in the original cast of Seussical as Jojo, and also in Beauty and the Beast as Chip. Maggie is one of the co-founders of a theatre company called 4th Meal Productions.

Anyway, this blog isn't super timely, but I thought I'd mention them because I've been listening to an audio of their concert together from July 2008 (I mean...what?). They introduced me to some pretty awesome music (entry coming soon!).

So, to conclude in the amazingness that was this concert (I mean, I'm sure. I wouldn't know. I was sadly out of town that week), I give you: Andrew's promo video!
